Logistics & Frequently Asked Questions
As you consider CDL training programs, consider these logistics and frequently asked questions we receive from potential students.
What does the program cost?
The CDL training program investment is $5,000. Additionally, you can expect to spend $150 on the final CDL skills.
However, those who sign a 2-year (or 200,000 miles) employment contract with Skinner Transfer Corp. to work after the completion of the program will have this program fee waived.
I work for another trucking company, but they don't offer training. Can I get trained and go work somewhere else?
Yes, Skinner offers a co-op agreement with other trucking industry peers.
What happens if I don't work for Skinner Transfer after program completion?
If you are training without a Skinner employment contract, you will be responsible for paying the tuition in full prior to the start of the program.
What can I expect in the application process?
Our process is pretty simple. As long as you pass a background check and have a clean driving record, your application review should be expedited quickly. We will be in contact after we receive your application to walk you through next steps and actions you can take before training starts.
When does the program start?
Our program runs every 6 weeks and accepts between 9-12 students per class. Please contact us for more information on start date availability.
What is the structure of the program?
The first 6 weeks of the program involve classroom training to help you get a grasp on the rules of the road, defensive driving strategies, etc. We will cover everything you will be tested on in the CDL exam, as well as what we've learned in decades of driving.
After 6 weeks, you will test for your CDL. If you decide to work with Skinner Transfer after passing, you will begin on the road training for 3-4 weeks dependent upon your individual skill development.
How do I get my CDL after completing training?
We’ll send you to a third-party, state-certified examiner for impartial testing. The cost of the exam is $150.
Where will I stay during training?
If you sign as a Skinner employee, we will supply you with a local hotel and cover the cost of your stay through the duration of the training program. You can choose to stay seven days a week or stay five days and go home for two. You will also receive one evening meal ticket daily (value up to $18).
If you are training without a Skinner employment contract, we can arrange for you to reserve a local hotel at our discounted rate. Please contact us to facilitate.
What makes your program different from other CDL training programs?
Skinner Driven CDL Training was designed by the experienced drivers of an established
commercial trucking company. Unlike the freestanding programs you'll find, our program gives you access to a live, operating trucking business to see how the industry works firsthand. The association with Skinner Transfer Corp. allows you to have a job opportunity or connections to help you find one after program completion.

How long am I committed to Skinner?
Skinner will waive your program fee if you sign an 2-year (or 200,000 mile) employment contract in advance of training. While we hope you find Skinner a wonderful place to work and choose to stay, you have no contractual commitment beyond 24 months.
If I work for Skinner, how often will I be home?
As long as you can give appropriate notice, we can get you home for whatever events you have coming up. While other companies might assign a certain schedule you have to fulfill, our dispatchers work with you to get you home regularly.
